Overuse injuries

Overuse Injuries:  What They Are and How Physiotherapy Can Help You Recover Faster

What Are Overuse Injuries?

Overuse injuries occur when repetitive stress or strain is placed on muscles, joints, or tendons without enough time for the body to recover. Unlike acute injuries (like sprains or fractures), overuse injuries develop gradually over time — often from doing too much, too soon.

Common examples include:

  • Tendinopathy (e.g. Achilles or rotator cuff)
  • Stress fractures
  • Shin splints
  • Runner’s knee (patellofemoral pain)
  • Tennis or golfer’s elbow
  • Plantar fasciitis

These injuries are especially common in people who train regularly, work in physically demanding jobs, or suddenly increase their activity levels after being inactive. They may even occur in trained individuals who change their routine without necessarily increasing their frequency of sessions!

Why Do Overuse Injuries Happen?

Overuse injuries are usually caused by a combination of factors, many of which include:

  • Repetitive movements that don’t allow tissues time to repair – think the repetitive nature of running, swimming, bowling in cricket. Almost any repetative movement that loads a certain structure can cause an overuse injury!
  • Poor movement technique or posture
  • Inadequate warm-up, mobility, or strength training
  • Incorrect footwear or equipment
  • Muscle imbalances or joint stiffness

At South West Sydney Physiotherapy, we see this often in runners, tradies, gym-goers, office workers who develop repetitive strain from long hours at a desk, and in one instance, from a local who had attended a few too many raves

How Physiotherapy Can Help

Physiotherapy is the most effective way to treat and prevent overuse injuries. Ultimately, it takes a structured, evidence-based, and individualised approach to get you back to full strength. No 2 people are the same – everyone has different goals, and so treatment must be tailored to help each individual achieve their personal goals.

Treatment for overuse injuries usually involves:

  1. Comprehensive assessment and diagnosis: identify the root cause — not just where it hurts. Often in lower limb overuse injuries the cause originates from the joint above or below the area in pain (i.e. in the case of knee pain, the ankle is often the cause!). This is not always the case, so an accurate diagnosis is essential!
  2. Hands-on treatment: Soft tissue therapy, dry needling, or joint mobilisation to reduce pain and tension with the goal of getting you moving, earlier in your rehab!
  3. Targeted exercise rehab: Tailored strengthening, mobility, and load-management programs to rebuild resilience.
  4. Education and load planning: We teach you how to train smarter, avoid flare-ups, and build long-term durability – the best treatment is prevention!
  5. Recovery modalities: Access our Recovery Room featuring cryo-compression therapy, and other elite recovery tools to speed up healing.

When to See a Physio

Generally, the longer you are in pain/experiencing an injury – the longer it is going to take to get back in action. If your pain:

  • Persists longer than a week or two and is not improving on its own
  • Worsens with activity and is coming on sooner in your exercise routine/daily routine
  • Limits your training, work, or daily movement

…it’s time to book a physiotherapy appointment. Early intervention can prevent minor aches from turning into chronic problems.

At South West Sydney Physiotherapy, we help you move better, feel stronger, and get back to doing what you love — faster. Whether you’re an athlete, a tradie, or just someone trying to stay active, we’re here to help.
